Preparation Checklist: What to Know Before Your Vinyl Installers Arrive
Being prepared and involved ensures that your vinyl flooring installation process runs smoothly and efficiently. Carpet Exchange provides expert installation services across Denver, Colorado Springs, Boulder, Fort Collins, Cheyenne, and the Front Range. Knowing what to expect reduces stress and guarantees a beautiful final result.
Substrate and Subfloor Preparation
The first step is preparing the substrate. If installing over wood, an underlayment is generally required. For concrete substrates, moisture testing is essential to meet manufacturer warranty standards. Our qualified professionals can determine if your existing vinyl can stay or if a full removal is necessary.
Three Methods of Vinyl Installation
- Full Spread: Adhesive is troweled over the entire surface.
- Perimeter Adhered: Adhesive is applied only to the edges and seams.
- Floating: The flooring is not bonded to the subfloor at all, allowing for quick installation.
What to Do Before Installation Day
- Furniture & Objects: Remove all items from the work area. Empty china cabinets and closets completely.
- Climate Control: Maintain indoor temperature at 68° F and humidity between 45-65% for proper adhesive setup.
- Old Flooring: Decide on removal and disposal methods. If removing old carpet, pull up staples but leave tack strips if reuse is planned.
- Trim & Baseboards: Be aware that moldings often need removal. Retouching paint on woodwork is the homeowner's responsibility post-install.
Important Steps During Installation
Be present at home to answer crew questions and verify placement. For safety, keep children and pets away from the hazardous tools in the work area. Always perform a final walk-through with the chief installer before they depart.
Post-Installation Care and Requirements
- Time and Temperature: Avoid walking on seams for 24 hours. Keep the room above 68° F for at least two days.
- Moving Appliances: For Full Spread or Perimeter methods, wait 24-72 hours before moving heavy appliances. Use 3/8" plywood paths to prevent gouging the new floor.
- Cleaning: Wait at least 5 days before thoroughly washing the floor to allow the adhesive to fully cure.
